• “Congo War” set to a picture of the original 7″. Thanks to Bionic Dub.

9.8 “All-time classic Ska / Rocksteady from Trinidad & Tobago”

A Coxsone Dodd production, first out as a 7″ on C&N in 1964.

Just when I think I’ve heard every Ska tune of the all-time classic calibre that I’m ever going to hear, along comes Lord Bryner’s “Congo War” into my life.

And he’s not even Jamaican : – O

Like the true Calypsonian he is, he gets topical with it, extending the listener’s interest beyond the dancehall.

The track’s a masterpiece from beginning to end, and the final 30 seconds in African tongue is a great touch, further setting the recording quite apart from everything else that was going on at the time.

It is sad but it exciting, when I read the newspaper
About what’s happening in the Western Province of Africa
Everybody fighting, to get their fortune and fame
But it is amusing, when I read all the bosses names
Such as Kasavubu, and Antoine Gizenga
Fighting to gain power over Katanga
Colonel Mombutu and Justin Momboko
Rivalling Kasongo to be boss over the Congo

My father made me to know, that my great great great grandfather
Came from the Congo in the Western Province of Katanga
But I can’t remember his name, because it was too long
And if I called the name, I might happen to bite me tongue
All this Kasavubu and Patrice Lumumba
Fighting to gain power over Katanga
Colonel Mombutu and Justin Momboko
Rivalling Kasongo to be boss over the Congo

Oh Congo bawa wa mojique berle
Arre baba arela ah roqo di mole
Mojique berle Congo, eh uwah Kosu
