Jaded Juice Riders – Mr. Psycho

8.2 “Fantastic Indie from the USA”

From their third album “Bowl Cut” released in October, 2017.

So many fantastic records slip under the radar these days and “Mr. Psycho” is another for the great list of buried gems.

Described as “a lo-fi surf pop project of brothers Josh and Mateo Hwang”, Jaded Juice Riders started out as a high school duo in 2014 by buddies Josh Hwang and Kris Nguyen. Going into his college years, Josh teamed up with his brother, Mateo, to keep the project going. “Bowl Cut”, the third album under the Jaded Juice Riders name, was “recorded over the summer of 2017 in a hot garage in Irvine, CA”. Their unpolished brand of bedroom garage pop is very easy on the ear, despite the distortion. There’s nothing taxing here, just an adrenaline rush made from pure sugarcane.

At the time of writing, JJR is currently on hiatus; Josh has relocated to Brooklyn, NY, and is recording under the name Castlebeat “to get away from energetic garage rock a little bit and make slower, dreamier music.
