“Excellent Avant-Garde from Indonesia”
From their album “Acaraki” released in 2014.
Some truly wild wailing and drumming action for you today; Senyawa are once heard, never forgotten. This’d be a great way to answer the All Blacks Haka, bit of Senyawa pumped up to the max on the stadium PA, hell yeah!
Senyawa is an experimental band from Java, Indonesia consisting of Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi. The band was formed in 2010 in Yogyakarta. The band mixes influences from musical and folklore traditions from the Indonesian archipelago with experimental music. The band’s neo-tribal sound has been described to mix “punk attitude” with “avant-garde aesthetics”. According to critics, Senyawa has managed to “manage to embody the aural flavours of Javanese music while exploring the framework of experimental music practice, pushing the boundaries of both traditions” to create a sound that is “thoroughly out of this world.”
Vocalist Rully Shabara has a voice that ranges from singing to wailing to ritual growling beyond this earth. Instrumentalist Wukir Suryadi, who plays a homemade string instrument made of a bamboo trunk, metal and bamboo strings, creates the melodic, and sometimes fierce, almost volcanic-like sound that blends in seamlessly with Shabara’s vocal.
Heard on Sean Hocking’s December 2015 show on Dandelion Radio.
