8.0 “Fantastic Hip Hop / Rap from England”

From their “1 Sec EP” (XL Recordings ‎XLT-675) released in February 2015.

What a killer combo, inventive and addictive.

Kojo Kankam (born 20 January 1997), better known by his stage name Novelist, is an English Grime MC and producer from Lewisham in South London.

Jack Adams, better known as Mumdance, is a DJ/Producer uniting music of different tempos, backgrounds and eras – after first cutting his teeth working across various strands of more upfront, club-focused output in the mid-00s, he started to embrace the full, widescreen scope of his musical influences, writing records spanning everything from hardcore to techno to grime.

In this tune Novelist details the struggle of young Londoners from deprived parts of the city. It compares the art of rapping to the violence common to the narrator’s life. Lines describing virtuosity with regards to rapping are juxtaposed with lines depicting muggings and stabbing. Novelist’s rapping is accompanied by a minimalist and starkly bleak backing track by MUMDANCE. The music evokes violence, fear and perhaps torture (disembodied screams and the sound of unfurling masking tape).

Heard on Mark Cunliffe’s November 2015 show on Dandelion Radio.
