• “G. Chimpele and Company – Akazi Akahala” set to the label image of the original 78.
“Classic Africana from Malawi”
From the 78 release “Akazi Akahala / Five-Five” (BB 859) circa 1953.
What a piece! A real dancefloor stomper, which comes complete with an infectious accordion, a raggle-taggle tea-chest rhythm section and affecting vocal wails, whoops and hollers. I find this combination irresistible.
The track, sung in Nyanja, the national language of Malawi, was recently brought to life on a mixtape compiled by Simeon Allen, “Shomi The Way – Beyond Borders (1953-1956)” (Flat International FXEJ-20) which he gifted to the world in November 2015.
If you like what you hear – and, frankly, I see no reason why that should not be the case – then you may be interested to know that G. Chimpele and Company have three other tracks on the mixtape which are equally as exciting as this one.
You can download a copy from the amazing culture preservationists at Electric Jive, here and, at the same time, you can find out a bit more about the content courtesy of Simeon’s well-researched liner notes.
