“Fantastic Novelty from the USA”
MAGOO! I unearthed this little ray of sunshine on “The Golden Age Of American Rock ‘n’ Roll – Special Novelty Edition”. Rob Finnis liner notes:
Screen, radio and TV actor Jim Backus (born James Gilmore in 1913) was probably best known as the voice of the myopic, curmudgeonly cartoon character Mr Magoo, though he also appeared as a supporting actor in dozens of films, including Rebel Without A Cause (in which he played James Dean’s ineffectual father), Myra Breckinridge and It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. In later years he played millionaire Thurston Howell III in the long-running TV series, Gilligan’s Island. In 1958 Backus and an unidentified actress recorded “Delicious!”, a hit novelty single on which the co-writer, Mort Garson, led the accompanying cocktail trio on the piano. Though slightly risque for the time, “Delicious!” avoided censorship, probably because Backus (who died in Los Angeles in 1997) was such a familiar member of the showbiz establishment. Much later in his career Backus made “Dirty Old Man”, a record on which each profanity was masked by a sound effect.
“Delicious!” will be a certainty when I come to publish my Novelty chart. What a great eccentric he was. You’ve got to laugh : – )
